Duxbury Clipper

Barbara Faye Cohen, 70

Barbara Faye Cohen (Solomon), 70, of Duxbury, formerly of Easton and Mattapan, passed away peacefully after a long illness surrounded by her family and beloved pets on Tuesday, April 21. Barbara was born on May 28, 1949 at the Boston City Hospital to Gustave “Gus” and Sarah Solomon, and grew up in Mattapan with her brothers Roy and David Solomon.

Barbara graduated from Boston State College with a Bachelors of Science in education in 1971 and a Masters of Education in counseling in 1975. Her career began as a teacher for the Abington public school system. She absolutely adored working with children and developing creative educational tools to make learning fun and interactive. In 1982, she transitioned to a small business owner and opened a movie store, ShowPlace, in Duxbury. Barbara loved getting to know every customer who came into the store, she could not go anywhere without running into somebody she knew. In 1984, she switched careers and became a department manager for the anatomy department at Tufts University.

Barbara had a big heart and loved deeply. There was nothing more important to Barbara than her family. She cherished the time spent with her partner of 17 years, Robert, her daughter, and her large extended family. She spent a fair amount of her retirement volunteering at the Duxbury Senior Center, Duxbury Conservation Department, and counting herring for the NRSR watershed. She loved taking walks on Duxbury beach or at the cranberry bogs with Robert and their dog, Walter. She spent every free moment working in her yard either planting flowers or vegetables in the garden. She always enjoyed getting in the car and going on an adventure, and frequently traveled around the country visiting her daughter and making new friends along the way.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents Sarah and Gus Solomon. She is survived by her significant other, Robert Cantrell of Duxbury, daughter, Jennie (Damon) Haan of Nashua, New Hampshire, two brothers, David (Bonney) Solomon of Braintree and Roy (Bonnie) Solomon of Marina Bay, one nephew, Joshua (Jenny) Solomon of Needham, three nieces, Jodi-lynn (Orone) Aram of Ramat HaSharon, Israel, Jessica (Jamie) Sidore of Exeter and Heidi Solomon of Charlestown, three grandnephews and six grandnieces; best friend of 64 years Edie (Steve) Venet, and many cousins and friends.
