Wednesday, Aug. 9

Calling all Lego fans. It’s the Lego contest entry week for children in grades pre-K – 6. Creations are done entirely at home and dropped off at the Duxbury Free Library between Aug. 7 – 12 in the Children’s Dept. Entry form and Lego assembled creation must be received at the DFL before 4:30 p.m., Aug. 12. Entry form available on library’s website, duxburyfreelibrary.org. Prizes awarded. All creations will be on display at DFL from Aug. 14 – 19.

Garden Crafts Drop-In. Make crafts in the Duxbury Free Library’s Reading Garden from 10 a.m. – noon. Natural materials to make items that will beautify your own outdoor space. All ages are welcome, no registration is required.

Thursday, Aug. 10

Laughter Yoga. Head to the Duxbury Free Library Resource Room every Thursday at 11:30 a.m. This is a weekly drop-in Laughter Yoga group where we laugh together without the use of jokes or props. It is free to the public. Laughing, combined with yoga breathing, without jokes for the fun of it! Drop in when you can, stay for the healthy benefits!

Cardboard Drive In. Thursday, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Merry Room, Duxbury Free Library, 77 Alden St., Duxbury. Make a cardboard car out of supplied materials and watch a Pixar short. Open to ages 2 and up with an adult. Registration is required and begins on July 27 online, in person or by phone.

Jungle Jim Wild About Reading Balloon Magic Show. 7 – 7:45 p.m. Merry Room, Duxbury Free Library, 77 Alden St., Duxbury. Program combines balloon artistry, magic, comedy and improv to create an amazing experience for children in K and older. No younger please. The children are given a series of safari adventure challenges, which are interactive performance pieces that will help them train to be safari adventurers. If they pass the challenges (which we know they will!), they will get to see a fantastic finale that will blow their minds. Advance registration for both children and adults is required beginning Thursday, July 27 at 10 a.m. Younger siblings cannot be accommodated.

Friday, Aug. 11

Lego Contest Entry Week. Creations are entirely done at home and dropped off between August 7-12 in the children’s department of the Duxbury Free Library. Entry form and Lego assembled creation must be received by Saturday, Aug. 12, before 4:30 p.m. Contest is open to Grades Pre-K-6. Winners receive a Lego gift card and will be announced on Aug. 21. All Lego entries will be on display at the library for the week of Aug. 14- 19. Entry form will be available on our website.

Saturday, Aug. 12

Herbs for hearth and health. Explore the historic importance of herbs in cooking and medicine and how they can be used in the 21st century from noon to 4 p.m., Aug. 12, at the Alden House Historic Site. Visitor will create their own herbal vinegar and fragrant sachet and enjoy herbal infused snack and beverages. Program at museum’s location, 105 Alden Street, Duxbury. 3D Printing Fidget Spinners. 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Child Program Room, Duxbury Free Library, 77 Alden St., Duxbury. Learn how to make your own real working fidget spinners in Tinkercad, a free design website for 3D printing. Open to grades 4 & up. Registration is required starting July 29 at 10:00am online, in person or by phone. All materials provided. Prints will be available one week after class.

Croquet Tournament. Here’s a chance to watch the seventh annual Croquet Tournament from 3 – 7 p.m. on the lawn of the King Caesar House, 120 King Caesar Road. For more information, call Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, 781-934-6106.


Wednesday, Aug. 16

STEM Playgroup. A new 6-week session of the South Shore Community Action Council’s hour long STEM playgroup exploring science, technology, engineering and math with everyday activities for both adult and child. The sessions run through Sept. 20. Please register with Debbie Wightman of the South Shore Community Action Council 508-747- 7575 x6247 to reserve your space. Programs will be held from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. in the Child Program Room, Duxbury Free Library, 77 Alden St., Duxbury.

Yoga for Grades 3 to 5 with Meg Durkin. Developmentally appropriate poses, breath awareness, and mindful games with certified teacher, Meg Durkin. Each class will end with a quiet time so the children can go within to nurture their spirit in a kind and peaceful way. Registration is needed and may be done beginning Wed. Winston Churchill presentation. 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Duxbury Senior Center. Churchill historian, author and distant relative Paul J. Tuesday, Aug. 22

Calling all seniors. The Duxbury Senior Center is hosting one of its trademark Passport trips to the Marshfield Fair. This year marks the fair’s 150th year. Bus leaves DSC at 11:30 a.m. Gates open at noon; seniors admitted free. Sign up in advance by calling the DSC at 781- 934-5774, ext. 5716.
